Terms of Service

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of PaperBeats (the “Service”), operated by an individual sole operator based in the Netherlands (“PaperBeats”, “we”, “us”). By creating an account, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy.
1. The service
PaperBeats lets you follow research topics and authors and sends you an email digest of new matching papers, sourced from third-party academic databases (PubMed, OpenAlex, Europe PMC, Crossref, Semantic Scholar). The Service is currently provided free of charge.
2. Your account
You must provide accurate information when signing up and are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure. You must be at least 16 years old to use PaperBeats. One person, one account.
3. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the Service to scrape, resell, or redistribute the underlying paper databases in bulk
- Attempt to circumvent rate limits, authentication, or other technical protections
- Use the Service for any unlawful purpose
We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.
4. Third-party content and data
Paper titles, abstracts, authors, and links are sourced from third-party databases (PubMed, OpenAlex, Europe PMC, Crossref, Semantic Scholar) and are provided “as is.” We don’t control and can’t guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or availability of this third-party content.
5. AI-generated content
Relevance notes, scores, and weekly briefings are generated by an AI model (Anthropic’s Claude) based on your stated interests. They are provided to help you triage papers faster and may be inaccurate, incomplete, or miss relevant work. Always review the underlying paper yourself before relying on an AI note.
6. Intellectual property
The PaperBeats name, branding, and application code are our property. Paper metadata belongs to its original publishers/databases and is used under their respective terms of access.
7. Termination
You may delete your account at any time via Settings, which erases your personal data as described in our Privacy Policy. We may suspend or terminate your account for violating these Terms, or discontinue the Service entirely with reasonable notice.
8. Disclaimer of warranties
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. We do not guarantee the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will surface every relevant paper.
9. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, PaperBeats is not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service, including missed publications, inaccurate AI notes, or third-party data errors.
10. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Netherlands, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute arising from these Terms or the Service will be submitted to the competent court in the Netherlands.
11. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be notified to active users by email before taking effect.
